HILTON CASCAIS, PORTUGAL

Aesthetic variations on a central narrative

twenty2degrees is designing the public areas, meeting spaces, guestrooms and residences of the new Hilton Cascais overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Our objective is to achieve an experience that feels distinct from all the other hotels in the group by playfully layering the design with abstracted local reference while respecting the brand’s key touchpoints.

The sizeable ground floor area is open plan. Our concept aims to ensure that each space is defined by its own look and feel while relating to one another in a cohesive, and stimulating, entirety. In creating the guest journey, we have ensured a certain amount of “show through”, drawing guests in from the moment of arrival by glimpses of what is beyond until they reach the far end – an outdoor terrace directly overlooking the ocean.

Certain finishes, details and features recur, including rippled glass and brass work screens, Pietra Grey Marble floor slabs, a lively colour palette inspired by the locale and artwork that takes its cue from the vibrancy of Portugal’s architecture. The country’s ubiquitous azulejos tiles and local filigree jewellery are subtly referenced, and, in this verdant location, generous indoor plantings offer a strong connection with the natural world outside. The all-day dining area has been sequenced and designed to be flexible through day to evening, from the bar and wine tasting area, to the main breakfast space with a partially screened buffet and show kitchen.

In contrast to the public areas, the palette of the guestrooms and residences is relatively calm with light oak and Calacatta Marble finishes softened by natural tones and dusty blue accents.
